We will be conducting educational opportunities to local beekeepers throughout the summer. Whether you are experienced or just getting started the "In The Hive Demos" provide you with an opportunity to learn from experienced beekeepers, to increase your comfort level in the hive and in managing your colonies.

Nuc and Package Installation (Free) Demo

We will demonstrate the installation of a 5 frame Nuc and a package of bees into 10 frame hives. We will install the bees and show how to use a 1 gallon quail waterer for syrup feeding. Other feeding options will be discussed. Following the Installation Demonstrations, we will inspect an existing colony, demonstrate proper techniques, and discuss the goals of hive inspections. Bring your protective equipment, wear light color clothing that is loose fitting, and closed toe shoes. Hive Inspection

Sunday, April 17th, 2016. 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM. Location: Burgh Bees Community Apiary 6900 block of Susquehanna St We will briefly discuss the importance of planning your inspection, light a smoker, and inspect several hives. Due to overwhelming demand, we are full for this month's open apiary! We will start up again next spring. Look for dates to be announced in May 2016. Want to learn more about bees and beekeeping?  Want to see inside a beehive?  Come out to our monthly Open Apiary on Sunday Sept 27. Protective head equipment will be provided. Please wear or bring long sleeved shirts, preferably with a collar, and long pants (no Capris or shorts please!). Also closed-toed shoes such as tennis shoes are recommended! A $10 suggested donation per person to Burgh Bees is appreciated. Registration is limited to 15 attendees, so register early! Members of the Penn State Master Gardner Program will be on hand to talk about the importance of pollinator gardens, point out the different plants found at the Apiary, and to answer any questions you have.
